1892   J.R.R. Tolkien nasce a Bloemfontein, RSA.
1895   La famiglia ritorna in Inghilterra senza il padre.
1896   Il padre muore; essi prendono residenza a Birmingham.
1900   Tolkien visita le di scuole Birmingham.
1904   Mrs Tolkien muore.
1909   Tolkien non giunge a vincere una borsa di studio ad Oxford.
1910   Tolkien conquista l'Exhibition al College di Exeter.
1911   Tolkien sale ad Oxford.
1913   Inizia lo studio della Lingua e Letteratura Inglese.
1914   Si impegna con Edith Bratt dopo che ella si converte al Cattolicesimo.
1915   First Class Honours all'università; reclutato nei Fucilieri del Lancashire.
1916   Matrimonio con Edith; prende parte alla Battaglia della Somme nella Prima Guerra
         Mondiale, ma è rispedito a casa a causa della febbre delle trincee.
1917   Incomincia a scrivere sul materiale del Silmarillion; nasce il figlio maggiore John.
1918   La famiglia muove verso Oxford.
1924   Diviene Professore di Lingua Inglese; nasce il figlio Christopher; viene eletto alla
         Cattedra di Anglosassone di Oxford.
1926   Si forma il gruppo di letterati "Coalbiters".
1930   Inizia a lavorare su The Hobbit; si forma il gruppo letterario Inklings.
1937   Allen & Unwin pubblicano The Hobbit, or There and Back Again; Tolkien inizia a lavorare
         sul suo seguito, The Lord of the Rings.
1945   Tolkien è eletto Professore all'Università di Oxford.
1949   Completa The Lord of the Rings.
1959   Tolkien si ritira dal suo professorato.
1965   Una versione pirata di The Lord of the Rings appare negli USA, dove il libro è
         immensamente popolare nelle università e nei colleges.
1968   La famiglia Tolkien trasloca a Poole.
1971   Edith Tolkien muore.
1972   Tolkien ritorna ad Oxford a ricevere onoranze.
1973   John Ronald Reuel Tolkien muore a Bournemouth.
